Inspired by the boys, the dogs and the program we followed with interest the production of the documentary. After meeting the boys firsthand and seeing the interaction with Bernie &amp; the dogs and what has been achieved, we feel that it is possible to change your views about young kids in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>These are the kids who have fallen between the cracks of the education system and face a range of issues from family breakdowns, to violence, suicide, drugs and crime.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; Community problems will be solved by community solutions&#8221; &#8211; <em>Bernie Shakeshaft Founder &amp; CEO.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2183 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Quota-website-2018-2-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Quota-website-2018-2-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Quota-website-2018-2-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Quota-website-2018-2-250x160.jpg 250w, https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Quota-website-2018-2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Backtrack Boys was born in 2006 the brainchild of Bernie Shakeshaft a former jackaroo.\u00a0 Bernie worked on a dingo tracking research project which inspired some of the work he does today at Backtrack.\u00a0 A couple of old Aboriginal bushmen taught Bernie how to track dingoes.\u00a0 \u201cI use the same principles they taught me about wild dogs with these wild kids.\u00a0 You can\u2019t chase \u2018em, you go out in front and calmly draw them in\u201d he says.\u00a0 The elders would get the wild dingoes to come right up to them in the bush and they would lay them down quietly in the shade like a farm dog.\u00a0 Years later when Bernie started his youth program this would all come back.\u00a0 Introducing dogs into Backtrack would be a huge turning point and become the cornerstone of the program.\u00a0 All the kids look up to Bernie and his calm, \u201ctake no shit\u201d approach seems to work wonders with the boys.\u00a0 You can never get kicked out of Backtrack and the kids stay as long as they need to.\u00a0 One of the reasons why Bernie is so successful is that he was once just like them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2223 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Backtrack-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Backtrack-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Backtrack-768x617.jpg 768w, https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Backtrack-1024x823.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/quotaalstonville.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Backtrack.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Backtrack is a place where they can feel safe, continue their education, get trained in job skills, but most importantly it\u2019s where they learn to support each other and pursue their hopes and dreams. \u00a0The dogs are an integral part in helping to tame their wild ways.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dogs dont Judge&#8221; The dogs at Backtrack have changed young folks lives, Each kid is given responsibility to spend time with, to care for, and to train a dog.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--EndFragment--><br>\n<br>\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quota Alstonville Wollongbar is proud to be a supporter of the Backtrack youth program.
